Physics Problems for College Bound Students

Introductory Problem Solving Skills Problems based of substitution into an equation
  1. A cubic box has a volume of 8.0 x 103 cm3. Determine the height of this box.
  2. The area of a circle is 45.6 cm2. What is the radius of this circle?
  3. A balloon has a volume of 1.4 L with a pressure of 102 kPa. The balloon is squeazed until it has a volume of 0.95 L. What is the new pressure inside the balloon?
The formula is P1V1 = P2V2, where P1V1 represents the initial state and P2V2 represents the final state.
  4. A car travels at a constant speed of 50 km/h for 20 minutes. How far did it travel?
  5. This question is a ratio question, not based on a formula, so use some common sense.
A 128 gram bag of Skittles has 63 skittles in it. Here's two questions
What is the mass of 15 skittles? and
How many bags of skittles can be filled with 512 g of skittles?

Working with Graphs
  1. To determint the slope of a line you must?
  2. Graph these ordered pairs; (0,-8), (2,-2), (4,4), (6,10) and find the slope of this straight line.
  3. Graph the following distance time data. remember that t goes on the horizontal axis.
    distance in cm   0.0,  60,  100,  160,   200
    time in seconds 0.0,  3.0,  5.0,    8.0,   10.0
Find the slope of this line with the correct units. What does this slope represent?

The first few questions are based on motion
  1. A car acclerates uniformly from rest to a speed of 23.7 km/h in 6.5 s. Find the distance the car travels in this time.
    Ans: 21 m
  2. Add these two vectors; V1 = 45.5 m/s [N35°E] and V2 = 82.5 m/s [S14°W]
Ans: is a diagram with a measured answer
  3. A jet plane land with a speed of 100 m/s and can accelerate uniformly at a maximum rate of -5.0 m/s2s as it comes to rest. Can this plane land at an airport where the runway is 0.80 km long? and if not how long must the runway be?
Ans: no; it must be 1.00 km in length.
  4. A car with an initial speed of 6.58 m/s accelerates uniformly at a rate of 0.92 m/s2 for 3.6 s. Find the speed and the displacement of the car during this time.
    Ans: 9.9 m/s with a distance of 30 m
  5. A rocket car move upward starting from rest with an acceleration of 29.4 m/s2 for 3.98 s. It runs out of fuel at the end of the 3.98 s but does not stop. How high does it rise above the ground?
Note: This is a "layer" or two step question
    Ans:
  6. A motorboat heads due east at a 12.0 m/s across a river that flows toward the south with a speed of 3.5 m/s.
    1. What is the resultant velocity of this boat relative to an observer on the shore?
    2. If the river is 1360 m wide, how long does it take the boat to cross?
